What are you suppose to do when someone you are playing is about to shoot the wrong ball in 8 ball?
Do you be nice and stop them?
Do you not say anything at all and let them shoot and then you get ball in hand?
What if it's a friend?
What if it's just league night?
What if it's in league PLAYOFFS?
Or a big National tournament?
What do you do??
What is right or wrong? What is ethical or unethical?
There isn't a correct answer, is there?
During one of my league playoffs, we were on the hill and the other team was making a charge as they were now only slightly behind. My teammate had just fouled and her opponent got ball-in-hand and proceeded to shoot the wrong ball. My teammate stood steadfast and didn't say anything. Her teammates were practically jumping up and down because they could see she was about to shoot the wrong ball.
She shot it.
My teammate said, "foul."
Her opponent stood there at first confused. Then STUNNED. Then cried.... ;(
They lost.
I had this happen to me hill-hill at ACS Nationals in 8-ball b/c I
didn't put the cueball behind the line. My opponent let me shoot and
told me sweetly (lol) "foul" and ran out for the 7-6 win. It's like a
dagger to your heart.
That player from playoffs, a dear friend of mine, was able to overcome the embarrassment and the feelings of let down of her team and played good for her team the rest of the playoffs.
And I commended my teammate afterwards: "That was a super tough decision there, wow." She shook her head feeling absolutely horrible, "but it's part of the game and we were in a team event" she explained sadly.
Not easy.
What would YOU do?

The Clutch
I wrote before how being in the clutch position comes with it some pretty tough responsibilities.
Being the hill-hill person means you either win it for the team, or lose it for the team.
Can you handle both?
Winning hill-hill is easy. Or is it?
Sure, AFTER you win it's fun and hugs and high fives and smiles.
During the match, your heart is beating, you feel the pressure, you know it ALL lies in your hands.
And what about if you lose? Can you handle that horrible situation?
I was the hill-hill person for our team this past weekend in the finals, it went hill-hill. I felt very comfortable in that position. I have been here for the last 3-4 years for my women's teams events, so I'm used to it.
And, as I have stated before, *I* would rather be the person who dogs it for the team than anyone else on the team!
PLEASE let me be that person!
Why?
Because I can handle losses now.
I really can.
Would I be upset?
Sure; of course.
I have a couple of hill-hills I didn't win. And each time I knew I gave it my best (even tho I felt bad, but I also knew it wasn't the end of the world.
Last weekend, I had to play safe and instead of the soft safe I envisioned, I did not hit the ball and rail. That gave my opponent ball-in-hand and she ran out the 3 balls to win for her team in the finales of this hill-hill game.
My team was still SO very happy we were even in the finals. SO very happy we even got hill-hill!
While I felt deflated, I knew I would be alright. And sure enough, my captain came up to me and said, "I'm so glad that was you. Any other teammate would be crying their eyes out right now."
And she is right. All these years of experience - I WOULD rather be the player that lets us down. I can handle it. In my 20s to mid 30s - I KNOW I couldn't have. I sat at home weeping over missed shots for days back then.
Not anymore.
I think the coolest part (besides my teammates fighting to the end and getting second in our women's league playoffs) was that my captain recognized how important it was that I was handling the loss well for the team. And that I was the right person for that position.

Team Spirit in Play Offs
I wrote recently about giving a teammate a high-five after she lost a game in our team event because she was new to pool and competing, and I could tell she could use some encouragement.
I also stated how helpful it has been for me personally after I lose to get confirmation from any teammate that (1) they were watching, (2), they still luv me, or (3) that it's okay that I lost a game.
Any recognition:
A high five,
A fist bump,
Verbal acknowledgement,
ANYTHING.
It's VERY helpful because let's face it we are embarrassed after we lose a game for our team and any encouragement keeps us pumped up.
So, I was pleasantly surprised during my women's team playoffs this past weekend when I noticed everyone started to do this!
I think it was because they saw me fist bump every time someone lost a game. Next thing you know, they are telling me "good try" or giving me a fist bump, too.
It was amazing how everyone on the team started to acknowledge every win OR loss by EACH player.
And, it just happened naturally after only one person started to do it!
BTW, we placed an impressive 2nd place in the playoffs! And the first set in the finals even went hill-hill. I don't think anyone expected us to do so well in the tourney or in the finals!
Go team go!

What would You Do? Hill-Hill Shot
This was one of the shots, HILL-HILL, during my Sunday League playoffs, in the Finals!
What Would You Do?
My team was stripes. Our opponent was at the table on the 8-ball. He was accidentally left this shot, btw.
What Would You Do?
Everyone on the sidelines thought instead of going for the bank in the side (because he might sell out if he misses), to play safe and nestle the cueball behind the 9-ball as a safety. He tried that, but was not successful.
We ended up winning.
TOUGH match. Lots of unfortunate roles for the other team in this game, but my teammate prevailed over nerves and we won the playoffs hill-hill!

Another Team, Another PlayOff Win!
I joined a Sunday team (called "The Los Borrachos") back in the Fall of 2013.
Well, we had our Sunday league playoff's a couple of weekends ago and guess what?
Yep, WE WON!
We were 50-1 underdogs going into the finals! Ouch! Even though we would need to be double dipped, those odds are pretty brutal, lol.
The finals only went one set. A hill-hill thriller, but still, we won undefeated!
I told the team they are helping my already great pool year. :)
We all played very well together, stepped in when another player was needed, and it was a great team chemistry and support! CONGRAT's, Guys!!!

Another League Playoffs Win!
As I got ready to head to the finals of my league playoffs, it crossed my mind that the last league playoffs I have played in, my team won!
And I'm not talking about the SAME leagues, either. Three separate leagues I have been on in the last year, each team I was on WON the league playoffs!
Do they know how to pick players or what? ;)
Just kidding!
So, I had a big head going into the finals. I figured we were just going to easily win, lol.
This is my Double Foul 9-ball league on Mondays. The league where out of the 5 players in the line up, two (2) of the five (5) HAVE to be females.
Lucky me, huh?! :)
We went undefeated on Saturday, winning all of our matches, that led to this 7pm Finals match on a Monday night.
The other team played really well the first set, and we did not. They defeated us 6-13. Ouch!
We never let up, though, and were ready for the second set.
A few misses here and there led to us being tied 5-5. That was GREAT, since we were down until that point.
Then the unimaginable happened... we won EIGHT in a row to win 13-5!!!
We played good, they faltered a tad and the rolls shifted our way this match. But good play and heart led us to the win!!!
This is my first time on the team and boy am I glad my friend Tami asked me one night to sub for her and I said yes. I really like this league!
And now, league champs!
