Reviewing Straight Pool Videos
A friend of mine is going to the Straight pool tournament in New York in the beginning of August. I offered to let him borrow some of my favorite straight pool videos, so he can study and maybe it will help him be more prepared.
Since I have JUST started to play straight pool at the house again, after I found the videos, I decided to watch three of them this weekend before I handed the bunch over to my friend.
I LOVE these videos and highly recommend them if you get a chance to buy them or view them.
First:
Pat Fleming's Break Shots, instructional video.
Second:
Pat Fleming's Key Balls, instructional video.
BOTH videos can be found at this link on Accustats.com. These two videos are EXCEPTIONAL for reviews for break shots and key balls - prolly the most important points of straight pool. I actually watched each video twice this weekend.
Third:
Phil Capelle's Break Shots DVD (it also comes with a book). Another great resource to watch and learn from about break shots.
I'm glad I offered the videos, or else I wouldn't have watched them. And now I know they will help me do better in my renewed interest in straight pool (for the moment, lol). It's amazing how helpful they were - I had forgotten most of the important tips and pointers and I know reviewing these will help me improve my high runs!

Video of Myself at the 2012 Texas Open
I found this video tucked away in my inbox.
This is me playing at the 2012 Texas Open held in Round Rock, Texas. My girlfriend Amanda Lampert took the video of me playing one game of this match to show me later how well I was staying down.
She says, "I wanted to get video of how well Melinda was staying down in her matches. Her fundamentals were fantastic!"
It's funny to see this video almost 10 months later. I know that they way I'm playing now, I wouldn't have missed those two shots! lol.
Also, I don't ever recall chewing gum during my match. I don't normally do that!
Anyway, thought I'd share. :)
Thank you, Amanda! ♥♥

Sofa King Good Champs (pic/video)
At the ACS Texas State tourney last weekend, my boyfriend's Open team WON the Team event! Their team name now is "Sofa Kings." Their team name used to be SOFA KING GOOD (you have to say it out loud to get the pun, lol) and it was printed on their shirts all the time, haha.
This year they won it! I am SO proud of the team! They have actually had a very talented team for years, but this is the first year they have won a state championship.
One of the teammates has a daughter named Lexi and someone on the team taught her to say "Sofa Kings!" every time they give her a high five - it's the coolest thing! So, of course I had to video tape it :)
From left to right, Tim Coons, Brian Anderson, Melinda Bailey (me), Brian Hitchcock, Cory Anderson, Lexi Anderson, Amber Anderson, Dean Williams, Grover Bruce, Stacey Erickson, and Eddie Erickson
CONGRATS, Guys!!!

Video of Lisa's Inspiring Tattoos
I shared back in Jan 2010 the inspiring interview with Lisa Marr about the story behind her tattoos on her wrists.
Then in early Jan 2012 (during a tournament as we watched Lisa compete in the first stop of the OB Cues Ladies Tour in Arlington, Texas at Rusty's Billiards), I mentioned to friend that PoolStudents.net and I captured her story on video.
My friend had not seen the video and so I tried to find it so I could share the link. During my research, I realized I had not shared Lisa's video on my blog. What was I thinking?! I want to ensure you all get to see this truly inspiring video for yourself!
Lisa has 'Strong' tattooed in Chinese on her stroking arm & the 'Courage' tattooed in Chinese on her bridge arm. "My strength is always behind me and you need courage to more forward. So my stroking arm is always behind me & my courage, bridge hand, is always in front of me" she explained. Lisa does use them during matches also: "when I start screwing up I use them to tell myself that I am strong and to have the courage to regroup myself & play better." When Lisa is looking down during a match, she's not getting down on myself. She admits, "I am pumping myself up by looking at my tattoos! Someone once commented to me that I look like I am giving up when I look down. I thought to myself 'got you fooled then' lol."

Panoramic Pool View!
Wow!
I would love to to be able to rent this for just a day and throw it up in the air in the middle of the Riviera Convention Center during the BCAPL Nationals! I think this would be SO neat!

Diagram Lesson #2 Phil Capelle
Esteemed billiards author, Phil Capelle, watched one of my streamed matches from a year ago (yes, it's taken me THAT long to put this up) and he had a few suggestions for me. He wrote up these diagrams and gave me some advice.
You can view the FIRST Learning Lesson from Phil here.
This blog entry is about the second Learning Lesson.
I will share part of the match via youtube video, then below I will add his diagrams / tips he shared with me. Click on images to enlarge.
Hope you enjoy these as much as I did!
This is the same match from before - I am playing for 5th place in the Oklahoma Women's State 9Ball Championships (and an OB Cues Ladies Tour stop), July 2010.
This was early in the match and I was extremely nervous. Although I missed the 6 ball in this match, I won that game because my opponent (Belinda Campos Calhoun) missed it after I did. That tied the score 1-1. I also eventually won the match 7-4 and placed 4th in the tourney!
Also, I apologize in advance - you will notice I played slow, but I do that sometimes when I'm nervous! Luckily this video clip is only about a minute, lol.

From Phil Capelle:
My memory fails me a little on this one, but the general idea is correct.
Diagram 1 - You played the 5 and allowed the cue ball to drift over near the rail, making it tough to get from the 6 to the 7.
Diagram 2 - The correct route keeps the cue ball away from the rail and leaves a relatively simple route from the 6 to the 7 from the position zone - A to B
Diagram 3 - Shows the routes to the 7 from both A and B.
Principles
Play for the correct angle
Plan for 3 balls at a time
Stay away from trouble
Melinda - in case you are interested in exploring the line up technique I mentioned, it is on pages 42-45 of CPP (Capelle's Practicing Pool). It will build consistency and precision to your set up.
Thank you, Phil!!

Diagram Lesson #1 From Phil Capelle
It takes me a while to get things posted up in my blog sometimes. This time, it was due to me trying to figure out how to get a stream to a video format that I could snip, because my ustreamed streamed match was almost an hour and 20 minutes. I only needed about two minutes of it!
Esteemed billiards author, Phil Capelle, watched one of my streamed matches from a year ago (yes, it's taken me THAT long to put this up) and he had a few suggestions for me. He wrote up these diagrams and gave me some advice.
I fully admit I was nervous to see the advice. I thought it might hurt my game, because I had been playing well. I'm so silly! Of course it didn't hurt me- it HELPED me. :)
When I told Phil I was nervous to even open the document, he was shocked and replied, "wow, Jack Nicklaus never missed an opportunity to learn something."
Yea, he makes a lot of sense and can really open my eyes.
I have TWO Learning Lessons from this match that Phil graciously wrote up for me that I wanted to share with you all. This is the first one.
I will share part of the match via youtube video, then below I will add his diagrams / tips he shared with me. Click on images to enlarge.

From Phil Capelle:
Diagram 1 - You played a soft follow shot, which left you straight in on the 7.
The problem: you need to cross the table for the 8.
Diagram 2 - Solution A - bunt in the 6, leaving an angle on the 7. Though its not a big one, it is enough to at least send the CB to the top of the ”B” in Cue Table.
Solution B - I like this better. Draw out so you have a bigger angle, which will enable you to more easily cross the table for the 8.
Diagram C - This shows the correct route to the 8. And the margin for error so you don’t scratch in the side. Notice the angle on the 8 allows you to easily come out for the 9.
Thank you, Phil!!
Thank you, Phil!!

Can't Just Wish and Hope
My new straight pool season has started.
Last season I was 10-4. you'd think I'd be happy. Nope.
Not happy.
My goal, still, is to win my little race-to-100 division some day. Would I like to this season? Sure. Will I? Dunno. Can't just win on wishing and hoping. I gotta do something about it. I gotta put forth some effort and not just hope I somehow miraculously win the division. I gotta hit balls. I gotta practice. I gotta watch straight pool videos.
I need to be proactive.
It's all on my mind, but I'm not doing anything about it.
Ugh.
Then my friend Mike comes to the rescue! He sent me a note today to check out his latest straight pool video. He has a home table and can video tape his runs. Much to my surprise, it's an instructional video! It was his first attempt to run 50 balls while talking out loud through his shots and thinking process.
And, I loved it!
He actually ran 84, and in only 30 minutes (wow!). Thanks for the vid, Mike! It will definitely help me start my 14.1 season off right! I already have more confidence after watching it. :)

Mika Verus Cleary
Although you'd think I would be referring to a pool match, instead I'm referring to a friendly grudge match of push ups!!
Yep, I said Push Ups!
Everyone knows the pool champion Mika Immonen and a lot of people know Andrew Cleary (aka Big Tony).
In May 2010 in Las Vegas, they had their second push up competition outside the Riviera Casino and little ole me got it on film! Ahh, I was so proud of myself and my small, little video camera. :)
I mentioned that I had the captured this on tape and my dear friend Nathan (of http://www.runoutmedia.com/) asked that I not show it yet.
What?
But I had the goods!
Ugh.
But, I knew he was working on a special project so I told him I wouldn't post any of the footage of the Big Push Up Competition between these two fine players until he said I could.
Move forward a year and I run across the footage cleaning up some files on my computer. I swiftly emailed Nathan and asked him if I could now show the footage.
He said of course and thanked me for waiting.
He also showed me the link to his footage - to his "little piece" he put together. Suffice it to say, he hits one out of the ball park with this! The graphics, collection of footage, sound effects, interviews, angles, etc., etc., make my stupid raw footage look like a pebble. LOL!
Check his out here (and be impressed!!):
EXCELLENT work, Nathan!

Darts Versus Pool
We get asked the question all the time, "Is pool really a sport?"
Most pool players think it IS a sport. That's why we are trying to get it into the Olympics, for crying out loud. But the general public sees pool as just "a game" where we knock balls around with a cue on a table, not a true "sport."
Most people also think darts is not a sport.
Obviously...because check out the Zoosk commercial below, questioning if darts is a sport or not. The guy even stretches before he throws the dart, lol, like an athlete would.
As I first started this blog entry, my intent was to share I am glad they didn't pick on us (i.e. pool) because we ARE a sport. However, as I reflect deeper, now I wish they would have chosen pool for the theme - pool could use some mainstream advertising.
BTW, "Mountain Top!" is yelled out by the dart thrower right before he throws his dart. Do you know why? Ironically, only true dart players would know (I only know because I looked it up). Mountain Top is a well-known traveling Dart Team. My guess is he's yelling that to further explain his expertise as a Dart Player.
If pool was the theme of the commercial, and something was shouted out, I wonder how many of the average Joe's in the world would know what we meant, also?
Can you imagine?
"TAR!"
"Jelly!"
"Earl Strickland!"
"Kiss of Death!"
"On the Snap!"
"Cheat the Pocket!"
The general public would be saying, "uh, what?" lol

Plethora Update
PRACTICE:
Well, I hadn't practiced since July. Eeeek! SO not like me at all. I normally practice once a week. Even though I haven't had one solo practice session since July, my fundamentals were solid July through Sept. My head doesn't lift up, I'm stroking the ball smooth, I FEEL good. However, lack of practice didn't mean I wasn't surrounded by pool. I had been reading about pool, watched my FAV Player Review DVD, sparred one night, been playing a few straight pool matches, and played in several tournaments in a row.
But... on Saturday I realized I haven't played pool at all since Sept 20th due to trips and home-stuff. Since my mom was out of the hospital and I had a weekend home, I decided to actually go practice, like was my normal routine the last few years. I got to the pool room promptly at noon and threw the ten balls on the 9 foot table, grabbed my ipod, and pulled out my lonely cue. I practiced for about an hour and I was so happy my fundamentals were still strong. Yay! I can see such a difference when I really lock my eye onto the object ball - my head stays down so well when I do that.
I then played a few games of the awesome game of one pocket before heading back home and running errands.
STRAIGHT POOL:
My previous straight pool match, I lost and shouldn't have so I got a bad taste in my mouth for the stats. I was just going to forfeit the final match I had to play. Seriously. Can't move up into first or second place with my now three losses, so I didn't really care about my last match that was needed to finish the season.
Turns out the league director gave everyone an extra month to finish out the season - evidently I wasn't the only one who needed to play more matches. So, I broke down and planned a straight pool date night tonight for my last match.
I'm sad that we wont start the next season until January. :( What am I gonna do for two months without straight pool??
U.S. OPEN
The U.S. Open has begun! I am following the brackets and live scoring. And of course checking out how the chicas in the tourney are doing.
But this year, the daily videos by Samm Diep are more professionally done than I have ever seen in the past! I am SO impressed! Videographer/Video Editor Dustin McCollum from Florida is helping do the camera work and graphics. He does video work for a living and his talent works SO well with Samm's talent. They make a GREAT team for AZBilliards.com and the fans of the U.S. Open! Check Samm out!

At the pool school with Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland I went to in Oct in Dallas, during the session with Earl, one of my classmates, Juan, video taped Earl shooting wing shots. Check it out for yourself - awesome!

Break Contest Videos
As I wrote in August, there is a HUGE Break Contest going on at Rusty's Billiards in Fort Worth, Texas that is $500 a ball! To read all the rules, go to the link above and check out the specs.
So, I start to show up on Tuesday nights to check it out and to try and be cool and video tape the break contest with my camera phone to capture the action (or mis-action) for my blog (this one you are reading, silly!). I caught three no-wins, my camera ran out of juice another no-win night, and I missed several other no wins. Then one guy got drawn one week and won $1,000 or so and then got drawn again the VERY next Tuesday and won I think $1,000 again! I missed the video opportunity! :(
So, I show up the second Tuesday in October (finally) just in time for the break contest after stupid league and caught a run of the entire rack and saw someone win $4,000! Ahhh... worth the wait!
My first youtube experience and sound doesn't get converted from my camera phone, so I overwrote the screeching noise with funky music available from youtube and so no "cheers" or "ooooh's" can be heard, which really makes the video! Dag nab it!
Anyhow, here are the videos:
First video (below) - scratch on the break by TJ:
Second video (below) - Corey doesn't make a ball on the break:
Third video (below) - scratch on the break by Jose:
Fourth video (below) - TJ makes a ball on the break and runs out!

Bustamante and Fong-Pang Video
Belinda Campos Calhoun covered the Challenge of Champions tournament at the ESPN Zone in 2001. I saw her about a month after this tournament and she was telling me about the matches, as she pulled out this piece of paper that had all these notes about kicks, shots, jumps, safes, etc., on it. She was very excited about what she witnessed - little did I realize until the end of the conversation that all those notes and shots she was talking about were all in one game! She said it was one of the most amazing games she's ever seen. It turns out it was also a sudden death tie breaker in the finals (for $50,000). WOW! And here is the video. Hope you enjoy it.
