Playing Even in a Tourney - Thanks to FargoRate

Catching up a bit from my trip to OKC for that tournament I played in January...

When we play in tournaments (whether open or handicapped) it's very natural to "judge" ourselves and our opponents ahead of every match.  We wonder things like:  who is the better player, will I have a chance, I should win, this will be tough, or this will be easy.

To be frank, it's is best if we DON'T ever think any of these thoughts and just focus on the game in front of us - that gives us the best chance to win!  But it is kinda normal to compare our skills to others.

The tournament in OKC was different than any other I had ever played in.  Basically, the race of every single match was not standard and instead depended on who you played.  And the race was established using an option on FargoRate.com.

It was a "575 and under tournament," which meant any player with a Fargo Rating of 575 and under could play.  And depending on who you played, your race was determined for you.

This is going to be tough to explain, so bear with me.

There is an option on Fargorate.com entitled "Find a Fair Match."  See top right choice below:

From there, there are 3 categories: Hot, Medium and Mild. The Hot column is the race that should benefit the lower ranked player and the Mild column would benefit the higher ranked player, if two players would try and match up evenly:

In the OKC tournament, the race was to 7 on the winners side and 5 on the one-loss side. And we were to use the "hot" column to determine our races.

So, if I (524) was to play a player ranked 460, I would race to 7 and they would race to 5. (See below far left column and find the match up that begins with 7, since this tournament was a race to 7 on the winners side and I was Player One). If it was a one-loss side match, I would race to 5 and my opponent would race to 4 (again, below far left "hot" column and find the match up that begins with 5, since this tournament was a race to 5 on the one-loss side).

So, what was SUPER cool about this tournament was each player was essentially playing about even, no matter who you played because the race was stat-dependent.

So, let's set me up to play a higher-ranked player. If I was playing a player rated 570 and we were on the winner's side, I would race to 6 and they would race to 7. See hot column on the left and notice my opponent is Player Two, so we look for the "7" in the hot column for the second player, which would be 6-7 in this case:

It was actually a lot of fun and really cool to realize we were all playing about even in every single match. I don't mean we all played the same, I mean each race was established under the "Fair Match" option and that allowed for every person we played to be matched up pretty evenly in our matches.  I admit it was a different type of pressure - not one where one or the other is suppose to win, but who will win?

There was no guessing who played better and there was no pressure like there normally is when we all race to the same number. It was cool that each player raced to their own proper race against whoever it was we ran across based on our skill.

I liked it!

Stats Can Ruin a Run

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about my stats in my women's league.  Well, all of my leagues keep stats for break and runs and rack and runs.  And of course 5-0s or 6-0s.

I have to admit it's pretty neat to see the numbers go up for each of those statistics.

But what it does sometimes is make me go for shots I normally wouldn't.

If I am playing against a really good player (or even decent player) OR playing in a tournament, I NEVER do this, but against certain players at certain times (not playoffs for example, but on a regular league night), I sometimes shoot a tougher first shot to pick the "easier" balls that would garner me a break and run.

Whereas I should instead be picking the CORRECT shot and balls, not look for a chance to run out.

If it's an easy run, then it doesn't matter.  But let's say the first shot of stripes is sketch, but I can run stripes and bump up my break and run stats, I will try that tough shot instead of going for the easier shot on solids.

For the record, this is NOT the way to play 8ball!  And I have missed MANY tough shots "trying" for that almighty break and run to up my stats.

You don't take a tough first shot.  You take  the CORRECT shot.  The correct shot might be to take solids and then play safe because you can't run out due to clusters or blocks.  The correct shot might be to take stripes but leave that risky shot til you have better position.

Your goal is not to run out!  Your goal is to win!  And that means by choosing the correct first shot with the correct ball choices.

My Women's League Stats

The Top Shooter in my women's league, Courtney Evans, (you go girl!) is a statematician and so she got me looking at my stats, too.  Okay, she's really not a statematician (a word I just made up), but she loves to look at stats and keep up with stats and compare stats.

So, thought I would copy cat her and see/share what happened in my women's league comparing my stats this year with last year.

Before I compare my year, I'd like to share Courtney's.  It's her first time to get Top Shooter so she deserves a shout out!  Her percentage last year was 68.7% and she jumped to 78.1% this year to get the top spot in the rankings!  Congrat's, Courtney!  She's da bomb and I'm so happy for her!

Looking at my two years on the league:

In 2013 Season, I played 85 games.
Wins:  64
Losses:  21
Break and Runs:  4
Rack and Runs:  4
Five and 0s:  5

Standings in 2013 Season:
Wins/Losses %:  75.3 %:  2nd place in the rankings!
Break and Runs:  1st place!
Rack and Runs:  1st place!
Five and 0s: 2nd place!

In 2014 Season, I played 96 games.
Wins:  74
Losses:  22
Break and Runs:  1
Rack and Runs:  7
Five and 0s:  5

Standings in 2014 Season:
Wins/Losses %:  77.08%:  2nd place in the rankings!
Break and Runs:  Tied for 2nd place (bad year for break and runs)
Rack and Runs:  1st place! (hellava year for rack and runs!)
Five and 0s:  Tied for 1st place (with Courtney!)

Comparatively, what does all this mean?  I guess I'm consistent?  :)

BTW, here is Courtney and I (1st place in the standings and 2nd place in the standings and teammates!)

Funny Stats

I felt weird / funny / awkward / moved the other day when one of my friends shared with me what happened when she showed her boyfriend her stats in league.

She shared the league stats with him because she was in first place in the individual standings!  She was very proud of herself, AS SHE SHOULD BE!

Being in first place in anything is not easy to achieve!

However, his response threw her off guard.

The stats included everything - team standings, individual standings, who has 5-0's, who has table runs, and who has break and runs.

She waited anxiously for his response.

He finally responded:  "Wow, Melinda has SEVEN rack and runs!  That's pretty impressive no matter what league you are on!"

SMH....

LOL.

I hadn't really thought about it before....  it made the stat really shine in my eyes after he said that.

Wish he would have said something first about her being in first place, though.
