Hadn't thought of this before, as most tourneys I play in are even races so we want to win the flip and break first.
But when we win the flip of a coin, we actually get the OPTION if we want to break or not first.
This came up during the Omega Tour stop last month and is a good point. Since the Tour is handicapped, sometimes you DON'T want to break first - because in a handicap race that may mean you are not breaking if it goes hill-hill.
Hence the term, "Flip for the Break." In lieu of "winner of the flip breaks.'
I am surprise this is the first time it's come up for me! So, thought I'd share.

Nickel Flip
Physically, I know there is no difference flipping a nickel.
It may seem like in my mind that a nickel is heavier (obviously only slightly) on heads because of the raised head on the coin.
Btw, I ALWAYS call tails.
Even when my opponent flips and it's a nickel, I still call tails out of stubbornness and preferences to always choose "tails."
In my mind, I think it will be heads anyway because of what I said above.
But, all coins are equal when flipping. One side isn't heavier than the other.
I know this because I searched the web for any website or research that could tell me otherwise. I didn't find anything.
But I thought it was cool when my Friday morning opponent dug for a coin in her purse for us. She found a coin and then asked me, "is it okay it's a nickel?"
Made me wonder why she asked me that.
Still curious. If I see her today during the team event I will ask her. Makes me wonder if she feels the same about nickels, lol.
Update: She said she asked if the nickel was okay because she was new to this tournament and pool, and didn't know if we had to use a certain coin or not.

Flip Response
Something so funny happened at the OB Cues Ladies Tour last weekend in Oklahoma City.
I was playing in the Second Chance event in the finals against fellow teammate, Tracie.
I had played her in the first round and she defeated me 2-4, but I came through the one-loss side and met up with her again!
I flipped the coin to start our match, and she called "heads."
I pop my thumb and the coin flips in the air.
It lands on the pool table, and falls on heads.
She tells me smartly, "Why Thank you!" in a cute, funny, very thankful voice. LOL.
I don't think anyone has ever thanked me for flipping a coin to their favor, lmao!
